Why is alcohol legal, but marijuana isn't?

Alcohol is much more devastating to the body, has more potent side-effects, addiction, and causes much more violence and violent acts (aults, drunk driving) than marijuana. So why is alcohol perfectly legal while marijuana has a negative connotation to it? I am not an alcoholic or pothead, just studying this issue for a Sociology cl....
