Can you put " Hand Made" Cedar bedding in a rodent cage?

The truth is, softwood shavings (pine and cedar) have chemicals called phenols that give the woods their deep aroma. The phenols interact with the liver and respiratory system. This often leads to unwanted, harmful side effects. Though some use cedar with no ill effect, based on my personal (and unfortunate) experiences, I would very highly recommend against using cedar as bedding.
