Electrical problems, any advice or opinions?

Hi, I've been told I may have a possible reverse polarity problem or a ground issue (its not visible to see the actual problem but most of my outlets spark when something is plugged in). I was wondering if its safe to plug in televisions, video game systems, etc. because they won't be effected long term or if i'm better off to call an electrician to take care of it. Which in return will more than likely be a hefty expense. Any advice or opinions which be much appreciated, thanks.
